What is Tamponade?

Tamponade is a condition in which fluid or blood accumulates in the pericardium. The buildup puts pressure on the heart and prevents proper pumping of the blood which can lead to cardiac arrest.

What are the Potential Causes of Tamponade?

• Chest trauma
• Myocardial rupture
• Pericarditis

What are the Indicators of Tamponade?

  • ECG: Rapid rate, narrow QRS complexes
  • Exam: Distended neck veins, no pulse with CPR

What is the Treatment for Tamponade?

• Pericardiocentesis
