What is Hypoxia?

Hypoxia is when the body is deprived of a sufficient supply of oxygen. It is a contributing cause to cardiac arrest. Adequate ventilation and oxygenation is vital to reverse Hypoxia. Ensure the airway is open, check for proper rising and falling of the chest and for bilateral breath sounds and make sure that the oxygen source is connected correctly.

What are the causes of Hypoxia?

• Lack of oxygen
• Lung disease
• Chemical or gas poisoning

What are the indicators of Hypoxia?

• Exam: Cyanosis
• History: Asthma, COPD, CHF

What is the Treatment for Hypoxia?

• Ensure airway is open
• Increase oxygen intake
• Ventilate/intubate
